# Exchanges

Within your merchant account, a cryptocurrency balance can be exchanged for another cryptocurrency or for fiat, and a fiat balance can be exchanged for a cryptocurrency. This operation can be performed both [via the portal](#exchanges-via-the-portal) and [via the API](#exchanges-via-the-api).

## Exchanges via the portal

In the portal, an exchange can be performed on the **Balances** tab by selecting a balance and clicking **Exchange** on the right panel.

In a dialog that appears, select the two currencies and specify the amount in either one of them. The other amount will be calculated automatically using the current exchange rate. Click **Exchange** to fix the rate, then click **Accept** within 60 seconds to perform the exchange.

## Exchanges via the API

The fastest way to perform an exchange using the CryptoProcessing API is by calling [/v2/exchange/now](https://docs.ca.cryptoprocessing.com/api-reference/endpoints/exchange-now.md). This will immediately subtract funds from one balance and add to the other, using the current exchange rate. The API response shows the rate used (`price`) and the fee; the [callback](https://docs.ca.cryptoprocessing.com/api-reference/callbacks/exchange-callbacks.md) confirms the exchange with the amounts exchanged and the fees charged.

Another way is a two-step operation: find an exchange rate using [/v2/exchange/calculate](https://docs.ca.cryptoprocessing.com/api-reference/endpoints/exchange-calculate.md) and, if you agree with it, use it in parameters for [/v2/exchange/fixed](https://docs.ca.cryptoprocessing.com/api-reference/endpoints/exchange-fixed.md). The second call must be done within 60 seconds after the first one, and each quote can be used for one exchange only.
